Why We're About That Work Wife Life

We’re huge fans of all things love, which is why we love loving the ladies we work with (say that 5 times fast!). Whilst we adore our whole team, everyone has their ‘person’; their office soulmate, their work wife.

When we’re spending a third of our lives at work, it’s no wonder that we naturally seek out connection and friendship in our workplaces. It’s the “If you quit, I quit; I’ll come with you” conversation, the Slack message thread of memes, the coffee silently left next to you when you’re having a chaotic day. Having the person who sits at the desk opposite you also be your friend, confidant, and personal cheerleader is the best reason to turn up to work every day.

Whether you’re Work Wife Polyamorous (aka best friends with everyone from the CEO to the intern), have built a Girl Gang, or prefer to have one Partner-in-Crime at a time, here’s why loving your workmates is the best part of the job:

You have a support network that understands
There’s only so much someone not involved in your office politics can understand about the situation. You can rant and explain as much as you want, but someone politely nodding doesn’t hit quite the same as someone who understands exactly what you mean when you say “Helen was Helening everywhere today.” They’ll rant with you, cry in the bathroom with you, and celebrate victories with you, knowing and appreciating everything that led you to that point.

It makes you more productive
Having a bestie at work keeps you excited about turning up and tuning in every day. Work isn’t just work anymore; it’s a huge part of our social lives. Work wives keep each other motivated. They aren’t afraid to hold you accountable, are always there to bounce ideas off before you take it to management, and gives you an outlet for fun when work gets too heavy. (If my boss is reading this; See, it’s actually a super good thing my work wife and I spend most of the day messaging each other! Don’t worry about it.)

You’ll always have someone to split a bottle with at Friday drinks
Once you’ve found your partner in crime, there’s no question about who your karaoke partner at the Christmas party will be. Having a support network and guaranteed friend along for the ride means you’re more likely to get involved with work-based social gatherings, giving you the chance to network, and to expand your social circle even more.

It’s SO good for your mental health
Generally, people just want to be included, accepted, and loved. Building a connection with your work colleagues ensures you’re given the space to feel comfortable and appreciated, and that security and acceptance is amazing for your mental health, both at work and outside of work.

Yeah, break ups are bad, but have you ever had your office spouse change jobs and had to go through a work wife divorce? The only tragedy of a work wife is that they don’t last forever. That moment of pride and despair when they tell you they’ve accepted another job. You write Traitor. You’re dead to me and I hope you fail. on their leaving card, all whilst planning a total blow out farewell party. Suddenly it’s Monday and your soulmate is nowhere to be seen.

Work wives come and go. Why not show yours a little extra love with some Vush action. Hey, they’ll never say working with you wasn’t interesting!
